Mechanisation & contract field work

You carry out mechanised contract work — land clearing, ploughing, sowing, spraying, harvesting, threshing, on-farm haulage — for producers.

Mechanised contract services: land clearing, ploughing, sowing, spraying, harvesting, threshing, on-farm haulage.

Nature of the service

What this service covers

The service covers mechanised operations carried out on behalf of a producer or a cooperative that does not own its own equipment: land clearing and soil preparation, ploughing and harrowing, sowing and planting, spreading and spraying, harvesting, threshing and shelling, haulage of harvests on the farm. Typical deliverables are interventions planned on the cropping calendar, carried out with maintained equipment and qualified operators, invoiced by area or by time, with an intervention report. It differs from equipment sales, which transfer ownership of the machinery, and from maintenance, which keeps the fleet running: here, it is the work itself that is sold, at the right moment of the season.

Skills and technologies involved
  • Operation and adjustment of tractors, power tillers and soil-preparation tools suited to local soils
  • Mechanised sowing, planting and spreading that respect densities and cropping calendars
  • Mechanised harvesting, threshing, shelling and handling of the main crops
  • Planning of operations across several farms and management of equipment movements
  • Preventive maintenance of the fleet and spare-parts management to limit downtime
What the service brings

Benefits for producers, cooperatives, companies and institutions

For producers: work done on time and over larger areas without investing in a tractor.

For cooperatives: shared mechanisation that increases the area cultivated by members.

For processing companies and exporters: more regular and better-calibrated volumes of raw material.

For project holders: a fast start to production without tying up capital in machinery.

For institutions: a concrete lever for productivity and for making farming attractive to young people.

Role in the ecosystem

Why this service matters in Cameroon and Central Africa

Contract mechanisation lifts one of the major constraints of farming in Cameroon and Central Africa: the drudgery and slowness of manual work, which limit cultivated areas and delay sowing. Few producers can buy and maintain a tractor; the contract-work provider pools equipment and know-how across several farms of the same basin, from the plains of the North to the cropping areas of the Centre and the East. It makes possible larger areas, timely field operations and lower harvest losses. For projects that want to produce in order to process and export, it is the partner of the scale-up, and often the first service a new farm calls on.
