Research & innovation

You produce the applied research, improved genetic material and technologies that agro-pastoral value chains need in order to move forward.

Applied research, improved plant and animal genetics, trials, technology transfer and research partnerships.

Nature of the service

What this service covers

This service covers applied research and its transfer to value chains: selection and multiplication of adapted varieties and breeds, production of foundation seed and breeding stock, trials on station and on farm, development of processing and preservation processes, laboratory analyses, training of professionals and research partnerships with businesses and development programmes. Typical deliverables include registered varieties, certified plant and animal material, validated technical protocols, trial results, publications and collaboration agreements. It differs from public extension, which disseminates existing knowledge, and from private consulting: research creates the knowledge and the innovations upstream of everything else.

Skills and technologies involved
  • Varietal selection and genetic improvement of crops and livestock
  • Production and distribution of foundation seed, seedlings and improved breeding stock
  • Agronomic and livestock trials on research stations and on farms
  • Development of processing, preservation and quality-control processes
  • Training of engineers, technicians and managers for agro-pastoral value chains
  • Research partnerships and technology transfer to businesses
What the service brings

Benefits for producers, cooperatives, companies and institutions

Producers gain access to more productive, resistant varieties and breeds adapted to their zone.

Cooperatives and nurseries source certified foundation material to multiply reliable seed.

Processing companies benefit from tested processes and laboratory analyses for their products.

Exporters base their quality initiatives on scientific data and recognised protocols.

Institutions and programmes ground their policies in trial results validated locally.

Role in the ecosystem

Why this service matters in Cameroon and Central Africa

Cameroon’s research institutes, universities and agro-pastoral schools are the source of the innovations on which yields, quality and the resilience of value chains to climate and disease depend. They select the cocoa, coffee, cassava or maize varieties and the livestock breeds later disseminated by extension services and nurseries. They train the engineers and technicians who support farms and factories. Their openness to partnerships with businesses and cooperatives conditions the passage from station to field and factory, and therefore the competitiveness of Cameroonian agriculture within the sub-region and on export markets. Making their work easy to find is a direct contribution to that competitiveness.
